In 1912, founder Sam Rosati started a business making Italian ices cranked by hand in the basement of his West Philadelphia home - his first flavor was lemon ice. He soon became known as the king of water ice, selling his popular ices from horse-drawn wagons throughout Philadelphia and at the Jersey Shore.
